Bulletin Announcements July 28, 2019

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 11:11 – “What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent?”  A generous, giving spirit comes from knowing that you have a generous, giving Father.  He will care for our needs.  We are therefore free to reflect His generosity in our lives.  We can be generous in raising our children, supporting the Church, and serving our neighbor in the community. In these three areas – home, Church, and society – the Lord has called us to show His grace and generosity to those around us.

THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the door Offering for Seminarian Will Fredstrom two Sundays ago.  The total was around $380.00.

THANK YOU:  It was a great pleasure to be with you in Services on Sunday, July 14th.  Your encouragement and kind words were a blessing to me, and the generous door Offering you gave to support my studies are a big help as I continue at Concordia Seminary in the fall.  Please keep me and all seminarians and deaconesses preparing for church work at both of our seminaries, in your prayers.  The encouragement and support we receive from local churches means so much to us.  God bless, and I hope to be back with you very soon.  Seminarian Will Fredstrom

AUGUST FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT: Life with Dog — After losing his wife Alice (Marilu Henner) in a mysterious bike accident, Joe Bigler (Corbin Bernsen) is left alone without FAITH to help him grieve.  That and the circumstances of Alice’s accident leave more questions than answers, and Joe begins a fast descent into the dark abyss of uncertainty.  But his salvation arrives when a Dog wanders into his garden and won’t leave despite Joe’s many attempts to rid him. Without so much as a single bark, “Dog,” as Joe has named him, shares His voice, a deep love and comfort that Joe has never experienced before.  With Dog’s love comes the discovery of God’s love, and a Faith that not only helps Joe toward the road to recovery, but also the unsolved mystery surrounding his wife’s accident, and the ability to finally grieve her passing. THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 10:40 – “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?”  Martha is doing the right thing but in the wrong order.  Her service to the Lord is good, but she has let it get ahead of hearing His Word.  Mary has placed the Word first, which is good. Is there any doubt she will rise once she has heard the Word and get to serving as well?  Isn’t that what hearing the Word always leads us to do?  We listen, then respond.  We believe, and thus we act.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 8:37 – “Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.”  The Gerasenes are upset with Jesus because His ministry led to the loss of their pig herd and their wealth. They want Jesus to go away before He does any more damage to their bottom line.  Their priorities are clear.  What about our priorities?  Is the work and ministry of Jesus worthy of our support and the sacrifice of some of our wealth?

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  From the Service of the Sacrament: “Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of Sabaoth adored.”  Three times the angels cry out: “Holy, Holy, Holy!” which is an indication of the threeness in one God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  This is the Name in which we are baptized. We have been made a part of God’s family.  And so we are called to live lives that are in harmony with our new family.  We are to be godly and to live in God’s image.  As God is loving, kind, and generous – so are we called to be.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Rev. 21:1 – “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.”  The things of this world are passing away.  We are waiting for a new heaven and a new earth that has been promised to us in Christ.  This knowledge is foundational for our stewardship of what God has put into our hands.  What is truly important?  What is worthy of our support?  How has God called us to use “unrighteous mammon” for the good of our neighbor and His kingdom?

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  John 10:27 – “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”  On their own, sheep are in great danger.  They need a shepherd to guide them.  The sheep know the Shepherd’s voice, and we delight to go where He leads.  Of course, the world, the devil, and our own sinful flesh want to pull us in another direction.  Namely, they want to pull us in the direction of death.  But following the Shepherd means life.  So, no matter how difficult the path is that the Shepherd points out, let us follow Him!

GOOD SHEPHERD FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES is this coming Friday, May 17th, at 6:30 p.m.  The movie that will be shown is “TORTURED FOR CHRIST”.  Be inspired by love and forgiveness that conquered Communist prisons.  Pastor Richard Wurmbrand suffered 14 years of imprisonment and brutal torture, while his wife, Sabina, was treated as a slave in a labor camp.  Their only “crimes” were their faith and witness for Jesus Christ.  Through it all, they loved their enemies and sought to win their torturers for Christ.  Join us for a powerful, inspiring and historical movie.  There will be plenty of good food and wonderful fellowship.  See you there!
