Bulletin Announcements October 13, 2019

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 17:19 – “And He said to him, ‘Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.’ ”  Only one of the 10 lepers who were cleansed returned to give thanks to Jesus.  Why is that?  Surely the rest were indeed thankful to be freed from such a terrible disease.  But only the Samaritan leper had faith, and his faith turned into action, as all true faith does.  Our generosity to God’s work in the Church is likewise our faith in action.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 17:10 – “So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’ ”  We can never put God in our debt.  Even if we lived in perfect compliance with the Law, we would still only be unworthy servants.  Our giving to the Lord’s work in the Church is a sign that we recognize our role as servants.  Furthermore, we give because we recognize our own need for that work of the Lord in the Church. And what a blessing it is to give to the Church so that the ministry of His Word and Sacraments may reach all in the community.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Matthew 18:3 – “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”  Children trust their parents.  They look to their parents to bless them and care for them.  We are children of the heavenly Father, and He invites us to trust Him.  He has given us proof of His trustworthiness by sending His Son to save us.  Children delight in giving their parents gifts – cards and crafts that come home from school, bouquets of dandelions from the front yard, etc. Parents don’t need any of these things; such things don’t add to their parents’ wealth.  But parents delight in receiving these signs of love and thankfulness.  Can you see how this applies to us giving gifts to our heavenly Father?

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 15:2 – “And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, ‘This man receives sinners and eats with them.’ ”  Thanks be to God: Jesus receives us sinners. What the Pharisees can’t understand, we praise with all our being.  We live by the grace of God.  The more of it we receive, the more we will want to conform ourselves to the image of our generous and gracious Lord.  Knowing the Lord and trusting Him come first, and the desire to imitate Him cannot help but follow.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 14:11 – “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”   The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  That’s called humility.  The Lord is God, and we are not.  With that in mind, how could we not seek to follow His Word in all aspects of life? He knows what He is talking about; we don’t.  If you believe that, then striking out on a path of faithfulness in the realm of stewardship is a lot easier. It just makes sense.

THOUGHTS ON STEWARDSHIP:  Luke 10:25 – “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  There is nothing right about this question.  What shall I do to inherit?  What can you do to inherit the throne of England?  You can’t do anything to gain it.  An inheritance comes by family ties, not deeds.  Our deeds follow and result from our family ties.  The Father calls us His own children.  So, we inherit eternal life by grace, and we seek to live out our new calling as the Father’s children with our good works.
